Adventure based program field staff


 

SOAR, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is currently seeking dedicated educators, mentors, field staff, and outdoor trip leaders.  We're recruiting staff members to support our mission for the 2024 summer season, possibly extending into the fall of 2024 at the Academy at SOAR. The Academy is a residential boarding school that also emphasizes experiential and outdoor education for high school-aged youth. 

We're looking for those passionate about directly engaging with youth and leading adventure-based programs centered on outdoor education and life skill development. 


SOAR's mission is to empower neurodivergent youth through adventure-based trip and travel-style programs. These programs are not only fun, challenging, and unique for our participants but also aid in developing social, emotional, and physical skills. Moreover, they establish clear boundaries and help our kids better understand themselves. They find growth and positive outcomes with they experience success, make new friends, challenge themselves, and work towards achieving their goals. 

SOAR offers expedition-style trip and travel adventures that range from 10 to 17 days. It operates from two stand-alone bases, one in Balsam, NC, and another in Dubois, WY. SOAR also runs adventure-based programs in the Florida Keys and California. All programs are co-ed, with each group comprising 7-8 students supervised by two staff members and a course director. 

 

In North Carolina, activities include rock climbing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, backpacking, llama treks, horseback riding, mountain biking, and caving. The programs may also feature cultural and STEM-based experiences in the mountains of Western NC. 


Wyoming activities include rock climbing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, backpacking, horse packing, and visits to National Parks such as the Tetons and Yellowstone. 


The Florida program which is based out of the Keys, offers scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, and travel to the Dry Tortugas National Park. 


The California courses, split between the Bay Area and the mountains around Yosemite National Park, include activities like surfing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, and backpacking.

Camp Photographer/Videographer


 

The Camp Photographer/Videographer captures camp life and shares media with parents via an online portal and social media. This person also contributes to marketing efforts. They cover various courses in North Carolina or Wyoming within a three-hour radius. This contract position requires living at base camp for the summer season (approximately 10 weeks) and two weeks of staff training.

The individual will accompany groups of 7-8 campers, participating in activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, rafting, caving, mountain biking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, kayaking, archery, hatchet throwing, tubing, boating, llama trekking, primitive skills, and archery tag

Requirements: Minimum age of 21 (exceptions considered); preferred experience in design, art, or media; 2+ years of photography/videography experience; must have reliable transportation and submit a portfolio.
