Hiring: Ropes Course Director, Ropes Course & Climbing Specialist, Bike Trip Leader, Hiking Trip Leader

Overview:

Camp Walt Whitman is a traditional, residential, coed summer camp located in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Our 400 campers, ranging in age from 7 to 15, attend camp for seven weeks and thrive in our well rounded program. Our outdoor adventure is a highlight of our program with campers participating in our high ropes course, low ropes course, climbing tower, age appropriate day hikes, five day backpacking and biking trips. All of this is just one exciting part of our overall program where campers also participate in swimming, sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing, arts and crafts, ceramics, woodshop, tennis, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, etc.

Our outdoor staff specialize in one area (either biking, ropes/climbing, or hiking) but are cross-trained and build skills in 2 of the listed outdoor specialty areas.  Our hiking program ventures throughout the white mountains, as our campers hike once a week with their age group and participate in a variety of overnight trips, from 2 - 5 days long.  The ropes course at Camp Walt Whitman is equipped with countless high and low ropes elements in addition to our aerial adventure course, integrated into our beautiful forest setting. Our outdoor program also includes a bike trip experience for our 14 and 15 year old campers where they can bike for 5 days through Vermont or 4 days through New Hampshire and Maine.

All outdoor instructors participate in a three-day ropes training provided by High-5, aerial adventure course, as well as an outdoor leadership school, and Wilderness First Aid training/certification. All of these certifications and trainings are paid for.

We are known for our warm, friendly, and talented staff of over 200. This past summer our staff came to us from 35 states and 15 countries.

A passion for the outdoors or one specific activity area (climbing, ropes course, hiking, biking), a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and desire to work with youth is all that is required to apply. Ropes Course Director:

We are looking for a Ropes Director to lead our multi-faceted ropes program and supervise a staff of 4 ropes specialists.  Previous experience leading and supervising a ropes course is strongly encouraged. 

Our Ropes Program is a highlight of our program with campers participating in our high ropes course, low ropes course, climbing tower, zip-line and our multi-leveled aerial adventure course which is self-belayed and has 20 awesome elements.  Our Ropes Program is part of our Outdoors Program which also includes biking, hiking and overnights.  All outdoor instructors participate in a three-day ropes training provided by a national recognized organization as well as an outdoor leadership school, and Wilderness First Aid training/certification. All of these certifications and trainings are paid for.

Ropes Course & Climbing Specialist:

As part of our Outdoors team, our ropes & climbing specialists have the opportunity to build on their skills on our state of art climbing tower, low & high ropes courses & aerial adventure course.  in these areas, while also gaining skills leading our campers on day hikes through the beautiful White Mountains. A love for the outdoors and experience with climbing or ropes is all that is required for this awesome position!

Bike Trip Leader:

Our campers ages 14 & 15 years old have the unforgettable opportunity to participate in 4 & 5 day biking tips through Main, Vermont and New Hampshire. Groups of 9-13 campers and 4 staff members set out on these multi-day adventures, biking 20-45 miles a day while learning about themselves and having A LOT of fun. Applicants should have a strong working knowledge of bike maintenance and repair, love long-distance biking excursions, and have a desire to work with children. During these trips, our campers sleep in tents at camp sites and our staff assure all elements of the trip run smoothly, including tent/campsite set up and take down each day, food preparation, group management, safety-assessment and navigation. These trips also do sightseeing, visiting the Maine seacoast, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory and the Cabot cheese factory.

Hiking Trip Leader:

Our hiking staff lead both day and overnight hiking trips in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. Our campers ages 8-15 all hike once per week with their age group, and have the option to do anywhere from one night camping trips to 5 day intensive backpacking trips through the wilderness. Our hiking staff also have the opportunity to gain trainings, skills and experience working on our climbing tower, ropes course, and even leading a bike trip if that is of interest to the employee.
